Sunsets

July 26, 2010

Norway during the summer is a strange thing…Not only does the weather keep changing from sunny and blistering hot to rainy and cold quite often(sometimes several times a day), the nights here are enough to drive anyone crazy. For those of you who don’t know, Norway is also called the Land of the Midnight Sun. Why? Because if you travel far enough north in Norway during the summer months you’ll experience nights that consist of twilight, and far enough north-night that are quite literary light as the day. The sun simply does not set. I’m always such a sleepless wreck during these months. You can imagine how bizzare it is to wake up, look outside and be perfectly convinced that it’s at least 10 AM, if not later, and looking at your alarmclock only to discover that it’s realy only 4 or 5 AM, or even earlier. It’s just too light outside to sleep properly. During the winter, the problem is the opposite. The sun is barely up, you only have a few hours of daylight.  Now it’s almost august, and the sun has turned, the days are getting shorter and the nights darker again(Hey, it’s 12:30 AM, and it’s just gotten relatively dark outside), and we get the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen in real life. The sky outside is bright red, gold and purple. Breathtaking! So naturaly, I had to run outside with my camera:

I know exactly how you feel. I woke up, thinking maybe I’d overslept or something, since my alarm hadn’t gone off yet (it’s cruel, having to sett your alarm at half past 7 during the summer)
Turns out, it was just 3am. the next time, it was 4am…
Now, I’m a wreck… And I really really really don’t want to go by bike with a backpack on my back to work..
