Death Note being remade!

June 19, 2008

http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/topnews.php?id=6357

So, it’s official. There’s going to be an american remake of Death Note. It was only a matter of time, realy…This has the potential to become a The Grudge 2-like disaster.  I can’t imagine how this is going to work at all. The entire setting, the characters, everything, is so japanese. Can you imagine an american Misa? or *shudders* L ? The only actor I can think of quirky enough to pull off L would be Johnny Depp, but he’s to old now.

The release is supposed to be sometime during either 2010 or 2012. The IMDB profile says 2010, but Bloody-Disgusting.com has it set for 2012.

Other remakes in the works:

Hellraiser

Nightmare on Elm Street, sometime in 2010

Battle Royale (Why??? WHY!!!!!) hm..According to Bloody Disgusting, 2011, and according to IMDB 2008?

The Birds (Yes, they dare to mess with Hitchcock) out in 2009, starring Naomi Watts

The Fly, out in 2011

A Tale Of Two Sisters, renamed The Uninvited, out early 2009

Last House On The Left, out in 2009 as well.

Friday the 13th

-Footloose ( No, I’m not kidding)

Check here for more: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/15211/38_planned_movie_remakes_you_didnt_know_about.html

There are loads of others as well, but I can’t remember all of them.

Well, the My Sassy Girl remake is out now…

Did you see on Wikipedia? This is DEFINETLY WAY OUT OF LINE BUT….Tom Felton (draco malfoy) is listed as Light Yagami….strange…

hmmm…I can’t find any mention of that anywhere….I checked Wiki but it seems to have been removed. Maybe someone put it on there as a joke?

Gosh. What’s wrong with writer’s these days? The original movie was awesome. Now they’re gonna ruin it with American remakes that never live up to the original. T^T
Honestly, I don’t think anyone could play L as well as the original Japanese actor. I could think of a few people who could play Light…and Zac Efron is not one of them. lol.

*Laughs and then shudders* Zac Efron as Light….Never. If that happens, I’m boycotting the entire movie, no matter how curious I get as to how badly they’ve messed it up.

Zac will never be light!!!!!I’m not watching it!!!!

this’ll be interesting- but no one could play a better L than Ken can.

i think zac efron would be ok though. he really needs to branch out.

  8. November 13, 2008 3:47 pm

Uh, Ken is play L well. How come amrcan could beat it? Let’s wait n compare. 🙂

No! Zac Effron MUST play Light. He’s so naturally evil already.

Regardless of who plays who it’ll be a joke if they can’t follow the story properly. Plus, how do you explain the concept of Shinigami to a mainstream American audience?

“The only actor I can think of quirky enough to pull off L would be Johnny Depp, but he’s to old now.”

HEY, I RESENT THAT! >< Johnny is not old!!! and it would be amazing if he’ll play L, the re-make actually stands a chance with him in the cast…

  11. November 29, 2008 1:55 pm

I didn’t mean that Depp is old, because he realy isn’t, I just ment that he’s too old for the part of L. L is supposed to be 25, Depp is 45, 20 years older, and while makeup can do amazing things, there are limits.
And I personaly feel that changing L’s age wouldn’t be right. Part of what makes him interesting to me is that he’s so young, and yet has accompished so much. The entire character would change too much if they made him older. But that’s my opinion.
And I do agree with you,it would be amazing if Depp were to play L. He’s one of the most interesting, talented and brave actors out there today.

I know – it’ll probably be terrible (apparently Zac Efron will play light *puke*) I disagree with the whole Depp thing. They’ll prob make L terribly British with a fake hollywood posh english accent. The idea of an american death note is so unnessisary and as must american remakes of Jdramas, it willl most deffinatly fail – soz if you disagree

Zak Efron is perfect for light because nobody likes him from the begging, nobody is actually supposed to choose kira as their preferred character to win. Death Note’s only purpose is to make L look good, not Light. L acts just like the writer of Death Note in real life, so it’s only natural that he’s the character everybody likes. Not only that as far as the ending of Death Note goes, Justice prevails, Light is the villain. Your not supposed to actually like him.

Now the perfect actor for L (In my opinion) should be Hunter Grimm. He’s Quirky, in real life, probably collects teacups for fun, looks and acts just like him and he’s not even trying.

Hunter Grimm would be perfect for L!
And Zak Efron is perfect for Light!

I could just see Grimm and Efron as the mains.

Yeah Hunter Grimm? Why didn’t I think of him? Efron’s cute but Grimm is just perfect for L… It’d be a mistake for them not to just give Grimm the part.

you guys complain about there being no one good enough to play L or the original movie is better so first off who says L has to be in the new movie or even Light. and who says it is even going to be comparable to original in any way shape or form simply due to the fact that may be completely different style of movie all together. The Death Note them is universal and thats whats wonderfyul about it, the principles and ideas descriped in it still work even if taken out of the original cultural context, i for one look forward greatly to this movie with great hope and excitment that this will help bring in the first golden age of live action anime adaptions in america, and with cowboy bebop, ghost in the shell, dragonball evolution, akira, evangelion: neon genesis all getting live movies in the U.S. soon i for one am greatly pleased to see just how truley inavative we can be when adapting these wonderful stories.

thats the problem with you fans who obsess over new things like a remake of a movie to which you claim to be fans. you let your attachment to the original cloud your vision of a golden opertunity, just because something is not same as the original does not make it bad and besides if you truley love and actually believe in and trust in death note as the wonderful storie and work of art we all know it is then we should also trust that the very meritt of the story itself will help ensure that the remake is a good product/story as well.

I agree true fans of the series would be excited over another movie and that Americans consider it being a great story. It would open new doors to movies that the japanese won’t make. Because most American adults don’t like Anime that much so the fact that we are starting to move into live anime movies is a big jump for the American culture

The American remake of Death Note is going to suck. They are going to ass rape the awesome story that is Death Note. The original Japanese movies are excellent and any true Death Note fan will be happy with only those, there is no need for a crappy American remake. The Americans just mess up everything they remake i.e the grudge, the ring, etc. i will boycott this crap film

I don’t agree that Zac can’t be Light. Everybody complained about Michael Keaton as Batman until it came out. Then when they announced a different Batman for the third movie, the fans started a petition to get Keaton back!

    Give him a chance.

(I don’t know WHO they could get for “L,” I can’t find anything on “Hunter Grimm.”)

I personally can’t wait for it to be released. I’m sure it will atleast be entertaining because of America’s technology; the shinigami will look superb.

And I can’t find anything on Hunter Grimm, could someone point me in the direction of him? He sounds like he’d be very good for the role of L, though I agree that Depp would be amazing.

As for Light, I suppose Zac Efron would be okay. He looks (kind of) like him… since they both have brown hair (I’m sure they look similar in other ways, I just can’t think of them), and Zac does need to branch out. But I don’t think they should choose him for this role, simply because of the teens that will boycott if because of him. There are other brown-haired actors out there.

To those who asked how you would explain the concept of a shinigami to a mainstream American audience: My friends and I understood it, and that’s saying a lot.

And to liem: No, you aren’t necessarily supposed to choose L as your preferred character to win. In most cases, you meet the protagonist in the exposition, the beginning. And you do meet Light in the very beginning. Now, that doesn’t mean that he’s the protagonist. It’s still your choice. Both Light and L declare themselves “justice”. Both Light and L think they’re doing the right thing.

There’s even a quote from Tsugumi Ohba, the writer, from Death Note Volume 13: How to Read:

“…I don’t think it’s very important to debate whether Light’s actions are right or wrong. Personally, I only look at it as, ‘Light is very evil,’ ‘L is slightly evil,’ and ‘Only Soichiro [Light Yagami’s father] is good.'”

I’m personally against the whole thing..
I don’t think Zac Efron could ever pull of such a dark role as Light or a Kira in general, he was in HSM for pete’s sake!

Who’s Hunter Grimm? I’ve tried to find information on him but it’s like he doesn’t exist. The way people have described him, I think he would make a great L, but I’d like to know who this person is exactly.

oh dear god, i watched death note 1 and 2 the other day again with my boyfriend and afterwards i started saying how bad it would be if they did an american version, the police chief would be bruce willis, johnny depp would be L, but an old version as no one could match that uniqueness or they would find some other actor who would be absolutly appalling and ruin it. This is so so bad, why didnt they just release these amazing films in the US and UK in the cinemas??? Yes they would be subtitled, but come on, they are immense. This is such a bad idea, we both know the guy from transformers is going to be Light. This is a very bad day indeed!

lol, many actors started their career in popular movies that are thought of as a joke. anne hathaway for example? it doesnt mean thats their only talent, altho in my mind, its pretty much embeded that efron wont b able to play light because of my HSM experience, u cant hold that against him, wud u have denied the opportunity to star in a disney movie(joke but 90% of the world watches it)? and think of the money

doesnt mean im against efron playing light(he wud fit if, and there is no evidence against it, he cud pull off the part) or the death note movie. remakes are made all the time, shakespeare plays? they r remodeled into modern stories, books, japanese movies too. hell, even american movies are remade sometimes for bollywood(usually they change it around to fit the indian theme/culture), as im indian(living in america), and i usually watch the american version first and am embarrased/scornful of the remake but in india, those movies are extremely popular(if u want an example, this is at the top of my head, hitch got remade into a movie called Partner). just cuz its a remake doesnt mean its gona be bad. also hoping johnny depp plays L(hannah montana, the brother is apparently 30 or 40 yrs old…the dude looks 15-17 and thats for a TV show, if they actually make an effort, im sure they cud pull it off for the movie too). also, for the earlier comment about everyone supporting L, thats incorrect, im a huge supporter of Light(not all his methods such as killing every idiot who uses the word f***(omg i cussed, im expecting a heard atk in 2 wks =p) but u get the idea).

You all need to grow up. Seriously this sucks. Watching all your stupid comments, downing something before it’s even out. It’s people like you that need to stop and let things happen and quit being so negative. People complain way too much now.
We all love Death Note so why not just wait and see what they do. You say it’s Japanese how can they remake it, like they dont have a fucking studio! Anything is possible in movies now.
They can make it better and that scares some of you. Stop whinning especially the OP. Just go crawl into a hole and decay because if any original shouldnt have been made it’s you.
Just like the rest of these hypocrites and parasites and if you fuck with me, I’ll write your names in my DEATH NOTE!!!!

    Woooo!
